RE: Poetry by Heart
This year, Lister Community School will be hosting a local heat in the national poetry recital competition, Poetry by Heart.
We believe young people can benefit from the opportunity to engage with both poetry and the element of performance and public speaking. We very much welcome this chance to extend the opportunity to other young people from schools in Newham. We would therefore like to invite you to enter 2 students from your school to participate in the competition which will be hosted at Lister Community School on Thursday 27th February 2020 . Further information about the competition day will be provided once schools have confirmed their participation.
The competition will require students to memorise and perform two poems from the ‘Poetry by Heart’ website (http://www.poetrybyheart.org.uk/), one from before 1914 and one from after. We have also put together an anthology of some of our favourite poems which you are welcome to use at your schools (included in this pack).
The competition will be held after school and performances will be assessed by a panel of judges, including representatives from ‘Poetry by Heart.’ The winning entries from the competition will be recorded and entered into the national competition, giving students the opportunity to perform in the grand finals. The PBH website provides further information in case you wish to hold a preliminary heat within your school.
Places will be limited for the local heat, so please let us know as soon as possible, and at the latest by Friday 24th January. At this stage you simply need to to advise us of whether you will be participating; the names of the students and their chosen poems should be supplied by the Thursday 20th February . The event is being coordinated by Natasha Sivadasan (email@example.com), our Scholars and Challenge Coordinator, so if this is something that you would be interested in or if you have any questions about this please do not hesitate to contact Natasha.
